How Insect Protein Compares
High Quality Protein
Protein is an essential nutrient involved in the basic functions of the body. Feeding a high-quality and highly digestible protein is critical to support your dog's wellbeing. Many researchers have investigated the digestibility of insect protein when fed to dogs and their results reveal that insects are highly digestible – greater than or the same as meat.
Hypoallergenic
Did you know 96% of dog food allergies come from animal proteins? Staying away from chicken, beef, dairy, and eggs can sometimes be difficult, but we make it easy to avoid all common allergens. Insects are a hypoallergenic protein, meaning your dog has a lower chance of reacting to insects in their food compared to other proteins - making insect protein great for dogs with sensitivities or allergies.
Clean & Free from Nasties
Antibiotics may be used in the meat industry to prevent disease or treat infections in animals. Black soldier fly larvae contain natural antibacterial and antimicrobial properties which means they don’t require antibiotics to prevent disease. They are a naturally clean source of protein and protect themselves against bacteria that may be found in traditional proteins, like E. coli and Salmonella.
Sustainable
Insects are extremely efficient and require significantly less resources from the planet whilst producing less greenhouse gasses. Black soldier fly larvae farming can reduce land and water use by 90% compared to chickens. Insect farming can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 70% compared to chicken farming.
Traceable
Oftentimes, you don’t know where the protein in your dog’s food is coming from. How the animal is treated, where it’s coming from and which parts of the animal that are being used in your dog’s food is often difficult to determine. On the other hand, insect protein is cruelty free, extremely traceable, and maintains the same high quality from one batch to another. Our insects are farmed specifically for pet food and we always know where all of our ingredients are coming from (most of them are from North America!)
Source of Prebiotic Fibre
Black soldier fly larvae are a natural source of prebiotic fibre. Prebiotic fibre helps nourish good gut bacteria and supports digestive health. Prebiotic fibre can be found in different foods like barley, apples, and oats, but it’s also present in insect protein! Insects contain chitin, which can boost the growth of healthy gut bacteria and improve gut health.
Rich in Essential Amino Acids
Amino acids are the building blocks of protein, and dogs require ten essential amino acids in their diet. Black soldier fly protein is considered a complete protein since it provides all ten essential amino acids. Research shows that amino acids provided by black soldier fly larvae protein are highly digestible.
